How To Identify Between DIN, RJT, BSM & SMS Unions

RJT, BSM, DIN and SMS unions are all similar unions and are sanitary stocked by The Metal Company

The RJT union is the most common hygienic union in New Zealand and stands for Ring Joint Type. The stepped seal sets the RJT union aside. It is the most prominent stepped seal out of the unions as it fills the crevice between the weld liner and male part making it very hygienic. The nut is available as a slotted or hex nut, depending on your preference.

The Metal Company has a range of adapters and reducers to make your install  easier with RJT unions to make your install  easier with RJT unions. These were developed by the New Zealand Dairy Board and meet the AS1528 standards.

BSM union is most  commonly used in Australia and the UK and stands for British Standard Milk. It is the only union to have an O-ring seal. The BSM union has a flat faced male-part. It has the option of a hex nut and the same thread and external dimensions as an RJT union making the hex nuts interchangeable.

DIN unions stands for Deutsch’s Institut für Normung. In New Zealand DIN unions are found on imported pumps machinery and other processing equipment compliant with the DIN 11851 standard commonly found throughout Europe, making it difficult to connect to New Zealand’s imperial sizing.

This is where The Metal Company’s DIN Inch range comes into it, which is a DIN union with imperial size ends making your install easier. All of the unions have a weld liner. However, the DIN union has a conical weld liner, which sits slightly inside the male part on top of the seal, ensuring the union aligns correctly when being tightened.

The SMS union is most commonly found in Europe and stands for Swedish Manufacturing Standard and is identifiable with its rounder threads on the male part. The male part has a square recess where the seal sits. The weld liner has a flat face where the seal sits.
